Massage Therapy and Rotator Cuff Injuries
Massage Therapy can be beneficial for many conditions including the relief and recovery of rotator cuff injuries.
A major concern with many people suffering from rotator cuff injuries resulting from shoulder strains or muscle tears is the inability to move their arm in their full range without pain or stiffness. In a lot of cases, it’s the combination of stiffness in the muscle tissue that prevents the fluid movement in the shoulder joint. This stiffness or tightness in the muscle can sometimes be caused by adhesions or micro-scar-tissue that develops between the muscle fibres and thus fluid motion of the muscle.
With Massage Therapy, the RMT will use massage therapy to break-down these adhesions, freeing the fibres from the scar-tissue. With additional massage therapy techniques, joint mobilizations, stretching techniques and exercises, the shoulder joint can be freed to perform a more normalized function.
It is also important that with rotator cuff injury treatments that the entire rotator cuff is included in treatment. It is very easy to only be concerned with one particular area such as the shoulder blade due to the pain in that may be present in that area. With the RMTs at PHYSIOMED Don Mills, we will consider and treat all areas of the rotator cuff with massage therapy and not just the one area of pain. When treating any type of injury, it is important to treat the primary as well as the secondary and tertiary areas for complete recovery.
