Massage Therapy and TMJ Dysfunction

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, more commonly known as TMJ dysfunction, tends to be occuring more often as society’s stress problems increase. Many sufferers of TMJ seem to be developing issues as they clench or grind their teeth at night or during the day unconsciencously due to daily stress. Nightly mouth guards aid a lot in reducing the amount of stress placed on the teeth so they don’t weaken and fracture over time but do little to relieve chronic muscular pain that results from years of clenching.

TMJ can also lead to secondary affects other than jaw pain; difficulty with swallowing, headaches, and ear aches can also be secondary symptoms of TMJ issues.

Massage Therapy at PHYSIOMED Don Mills can assist with the relievement of pain and tension in the muscles of the TMJ. Massage Therapy can directly improve the signs and symptoms of TMJ by directly addressing the muscles and joints of the TMJ and neck. By massaging the muscles that operate the opening and closing of the jaw, the muscles will have more flexibility and elasticity. Trigger points that often refer pain to the head and into the ears can be elimated with regular sessions of massage therapy. Even in most cases of difficult swallowing can be addressed with massage therapy by directly working on the muscles that control the tongue and thus swallowing.

Massage Therapy at PHYSIOMED Don Mills along with our health team can assist you in your pain management.
